Rebuilt her offer around online visibility when COVID stopped live filming, then raised her prices, turned work away and added onto her studio.

Bonnie K. in conversation with Carla CherryWatch the interviewBonnie turned her business around from possible closure to adding onto her studio

Bonnie K. owns Video Magic Productions. She has 40 years in video and a past life as a working actress, with credits she had never once put in front of a prospect.

When COVID stopped live filming in early 2020 she was in the middle of working with Carla, and she told her she was done. If she could not be in the room with people, there was no business left. Carla's answer was that the old offer was over, not the business, and that the job now was to find what people needed instead.

What they found was visibility. Everyone had moved onto Zoom, and Bonnie could rank a client on the first page of Google with a video and a screenshot to prove it. The pitch stopped being a case for why video matters and became a question of how fast they could get it. She raised her prices, stopped chasing, added onto her studio, and at one point had to turn work away.

The interview

Carla Cherry with Bonnie K., recorded in 2021.

Carla

Hello, Bonnie. I'm sitting here with Bonnie K. of Video Magic Productions. How are you, Bonnie?

Bonnie

I'm fantastic. How are you?

Carla

I'm doing great. Thank you so much for joining me. I really wanna talk about your big transformation and all the things that you have experienced and working with me and the program. So why don't you just jump off with your biggest transformation that happened?

Bonnie

I think a big transformation that happened was actually at a time when a lot of people were having transformations, but many of them in the wrong direction.

And that's when COVID hit back in early 2020. And I was working with you at the time. And we were literally in the middle of working together when I said to you, I think I'm done.

After forty years of doing video, I went, I guess the universe is telling me it's enough, stop, because I went, if I can't be out there filming people live, which I couldn't, I went, that's it, I'm done, I can't do anything else. And you said, well, wait a minute ... that's not really true. You said, what I'm doing with my clients and I can help you with is finding how to pivot, that became the big word ... back then. And it was like, yeah, but pivot from, pivot to what? I can't film anybody. So, well, we'll discuss it. And you helped me realize, which I've always knew, that I knew a lot more than I thought I knew. And I could do a lot more than I thought I did. And to gain the confidence in being able to go, what are people needing? And how can I help fill that need, that gap of, and even though maybe I can't get to them live, we realized that people were on Zoom calls, everybody was now online. And that became a big thing for me, because I was on all these networking Zoom calls. And I realized, oh, this is interesting, because one of the things I used to try to preach to people was how important it was to be online. I went, I need to help them gain some type of presence online. And I discovered a way to help them get on Google's page number one within seconds of me loading any of the videos, the ones that I created graphically, the voiceover videos, or if I did film them live, I can take that, upload it to YouTube, and they were on page one of Google, and I would take a screenshot of that and send it to them and saying, you now have an online presence.

Carla

That's right. And it was awesome. So what we did was, so you, just to recap, I can remember the day where you said ... and you were dead serious. You're like, it's over. Done. It's over, and we said, no, we're gonna find your new offer. Maybe your old offer was over, but your new offer is what we have to find. So we found your new offer, and you found it because I said you gotta dig for it. We gotta figure out what is it that we're going, what's the need? What's the problem that we're gonna solve now? And so the problem was visibility, and especially because of COVID, they needed visibility before, but they really need visibility now because nobody can ... So you were able to say, hey, I can give you this video, I can do it without even being in the same room with you, and I can rank you at number one on Google, and that's what you did. And then once you did that and you started sending it out to all your clients or pre clients ... and you were able to give proof, which is really important, in saying, hey, click on this link, these are three other clients that I've done this for and I can do this for you, and it went from having to talk them into getting video and how important video is to where do I sign? How fast can I get this? And that's the power of a good offer. That's the power of a power offer. Giving them an offer, putting it together, making it irresistible ...

Bonnie

It was too irresistible. I had to stop. I couldn't handle all the people to do this.

Carla

It was a great problem.

Bonnie

And then another thing you taught me, because of the pivoting, was there's never a, oh, well, that's it. There's always, if things change, and that's why my business is changing, well, people's needs are also changing, is why maybe they're not calling me for that anymore, because now they need, let me see what they need now. And I have been continuing through these past couple of months to kind of go with the flow to say what's happening now, because of what you taught me, what I learned from you. And my business continues to expand and grow.

And I'm also much more confident in myself and my abilities and what I know and what I can learn and what I can offer. And I don't care if people say no to me, if I quote them a price, because maybe it's too high, because I never did that before. And now when I quote people things, it's like, I quoted someone something the other day that if I had quoted before, I would have thought they'll never go with this. And I quoted it. She's, oh ... I went too cheap again, but I went higher than I had before. It's just unbelievable. And these people who are now, they've seen my work, they've seen what I'm doing for other people. And that's why they've been, they're coming out of the woodwork calling me now. Like I need to work with you.

Carla

So congratulations. And a couple of things that have happened is A, your confidence immediately started to shoot up. Your confidence went way ... I want you to talk about how it changes, when your confidence goes up, you're getting more clients, you're turning work down, by the way, you have added on to your studio, and I just want to tell everybody some of the things that happens when you're, when you get the right offer ...

Bonnie

Well, first of all, one of the things on my network Zoom calls that happened, when they went, would go around to do your little thing, I didn't wanna say anything. It's like, I didn't want people go, oh, I need, no ... So I started like, yeah, I'm Bonnie with Video Magic and I create movies, create video, next. It's like, you don't want to call me, it's like, I almost didn't want to, no matter what I did, people are, I'm getting little stuff in the chat boxes. Hey, I need to call you, can you give me your personal information? I need you, I need you. ...

Carla

You're magnetizing people.

Bonnie

Yeah, yeah. It's when, I knew this as an actress, the whole desperate stuff, and with your daughter being an actress, you don't get the work when you're desperate. You get it when you, I don't need you. I don't need any of this because I'm good and my work is good and it shows, and you wanna work with me, fine, you don't, really doesn't matter. ... And it's true. And I really absolutely feel that way. I don't care if someone doesn't wanna work with me. Before it was like, oh my God, I'm not good. It's like, no.

Carla

... When we were working on your offer and we were working on your pitch ... I remember you were hiding, you were hiding, and then I found out that you were in the James Bond movie and you did all this cool stuff as an actress, and I was like, wait a minute ... So I really encourage my clients to utilize their secret sauce, what's in their secret sauce. And that's what makes you different. That's what brings your specific value that nobody else can bring to the market. And you got to utilize it and really step into it. And I remember, we put your pitch together. And I think the words as a lot of times feel a little big for people because it sounds braggy in the beginning or they're not fully ready to step into it ...

Bonnie

... I just remember that the pitch changed everything. That I came into my own with ... letting people know that I'm a professional actress and a creative director and a video marketing coach and a video producer. And just those words was like, yes, I am a producer. I produced, I am a professional video producer. I've heard other people say that and they went, oh wow, they're a video producer. They're so big, they're so great. Yeah, no.

And now on some calls I show people some of my stills from some of my acting stuff. When I was in Days of Our Lives and on Charlie's Angels and in movies, Universal, and they're like, oh my God, I think I remember you. It just brings the reality of, yeah, I've been around in front of the camera, behind the camera. I've won awards.

Carla

Oh, an award winning.

Bonnie

Yeah, yeah. Award winning. And I won, and I got it again for 2021. So it's just, it continues.

Carla

... We think in our heads we don't know everything or we're not the best or we're sometimes our worst self critic. And we don't know that the things that we have and the special gifts and talents that we have that makes up our special sauce, we don't know sometimes that, that's exactly what someone who's looking for you and looking for the problem that you're going to solve, they're going to want it from you. That person that has that problem is going to want you to solve it because of all the things that make up you and your special sauce and how in your delivery ...

Bonnie

... There was a time when you actually were a speaker at a meeting that I was on. It was the Pasadena meeting of women. And at the very end, and you were awesome. And at the very end, and I almost didn't get on this meeting. It was very interesting. I almost didn't get on, onto the meeting, because of our offer, I was supposed to speak to somebody around that time. And then I told her, can we talk later? So I came on very last minute and I stayed for a while, and almost at the end of the meeting, somebody who also, it was her first time on one of these meetings, raised her hand and she had a question about subtitles, captions on YouTube videos. And I didn't say anything, and you said, that sounds like a Bonnie question. So I unmuted myself and realized that it's a whole explanation. So I just said to this person who I didn't know, I can help you with that. Why don't we talk after, I'll give you my information or whatever.

She called me afterwards, she was working for some company. They had a video they had had done a while ago with a video production company who put it up on YouTube. And the company's name was ... YouTube did their own, so the company didn't do the captions, it was YouTube's captioning. And YouTube heard ... as vomit. And a client called this person to tell her, by the way, your video says vomit, and said, you really should fix that. So I said to her, when we talked, I said, why don't you just, it's very easy to fix that. You just go on. Said, whoever put the video up, if you put the video up, just go in, and she says, oh, well, I didn't do it. It's a video company, we called them and they said, oh, well, you were on our standard package. And in order for us to do this, we'd have to charge you blah ... And I went, you've got to be kidding me. I said, first of all, we're in COVID time, and you would think that a company would want to, even if they did have stuff like that.

Secondly, I don't play those games when I work with somebody. I'm there to help them. They don't do something like that. And thirdly, that would take them about 10 seconds to correct.

Carla

One hundred percent.

Bonnie

I said, if you give me your login information, I don't know if you want to, I could go in. Anyway, we ended up talking for two hours. She fell in love with me on that phone call, talked to her boss the next day. I ended up doing their next company video.

They got rid of the video with the vomit and they have my video up now.

And she has now since left that company, she's got her own company. She has me do all her videos. She then, the next day, she couldn't get over having talked to me. So the next day she called, she said, I'm telling everyone on every network call that I'm raving about you. And then she had somebody that she wanted me to meet right away, who she introduced me to, who has their own, who leads their own network group with seven chapters in the South Bay, which is a different area than I live in. ... I am now their video person. ... She tells every single person she meets, and she meets lots of people, because that's her world, about me. I've gotten probably 10 new clients from her. ... Because of you saying that's a Bonnie question on a Zoom call.

Carla

That's amazing.

Bonnie

So it's amazing. You never know. And again, once the people do hear, and again, I wasn't telling, she just found out that I'm caring and I'm somewhat knowledgeable. And then once I did the video for her company, she also went, oh my God ...

Carla

... The trickle down effect of you and your confidence rising ... your confidence level going up, shooting up like that, and then it's showing on the outside. ... We dig down in there and we bring it back up and we figure out, okay, let's utilize who you are as a person, your experiences, and then also figure out who you want to work with. ... You build and design the business of your dreams, and you do that ... by figuring out really who you are and how great you are and who you wanna serve and then putting together power offer of that. And your offers, we were just talking before we got on, you were saying I can do interactive video ... I can do captioning. I can do embedding. You can do all these amazing things now that everybody's on Zoom and now that people are really embracing the digital world, times ten since COVID, you have all these incredible things, the captioning helps people get the SEO ranking up, and you're not just doing with the initial video, but you're doing with the captioning. This is amazing stuff. This is really amazing ... And I'm just so happy for you.

Bonnie

And it's my pleasure. And I just want to tell this other story. When I was leaving LA, I decided to move to Charleston, South Carolina in the middle of COVID. You called me as, I don't know if you know this, but you called me as I was literally driving out of LA. ... That's when I got that call from you. And of course in my mind I'm going, am I doing the right thing, move, and you said to me, I just have to tell you, you changed my life. I had to call you right now and tell you I changed, you changed my life. And that to me was like, that was it ...

Bonnie

... You gave me a new lease on, literally, on life, on business. I feel there's nothing I can't do now. But the biggest thing is I'm not that hungry desperate. I'm, yeah, this is what I do. Like it, don't like it, doesn't matter, because I do damn good work. If you wanna be part of it, you'd be part of it. You want be part of my life and my world and what I can offer.

You really did. You changed my, you changed the way that I look at myself in terms of how I look at what I am to my business and for my business and about my business. And I'm so much more and offer so much more than I ever allowed myself to present or to think or just to grasp onto of who and what I am and what I can do for people. I do do some pretty amazing things for people. And I create great videos and it's my passion and it's my art. I do, I make movies. I make something that emotionally people will feel. And you helped me really, really, really grasp that

so that I'm confident in my own skin, and my business took off and never looked back. And it just continues to this very day. I told you just this last week, I've learned five more things. It's nonstop. It just, it won't stop. So it's very exciting and it makes me feel great and young and powerful ...

Carla

And you look great and young and powerful. It shows. ... And so if somebody's sitting on the fence and thinking about working with me or thinking about joining the program, what would you say to them?

Bonnie

Off the fence, get off. You are, if you were, whatever, if anybody is on the fence, get off the darn fence and start working with Carla, because she'll change your business and your life.
